Tuncurry Bowling Club Host 48th Australian Police Bowling Championships
One hundred and twenty competitors from five States descended upon Tuncurry Bowling Club on the 6th May to participate in the 48th Australian Police Bowling Carnival which ran through to13th of May, 2006. With them came wives, partners, supporters and friends to swell those attending to well over 200. The majority of those people, and many Tuncurry members, attended a performance by the full NSW Police Band on the Saturday evening prior to the opening ceremony. It was an outstanding night of music, in particular the wonderful voice of Latitia Davey, the Police Band’s vocalist.

A large crowd turned up to watch the Opening Ceremony on Sunday morning and what a wonderful spectacle it was as the 120 players marched onto the green to the music from the Police Band. After the parade of Police bowlers were welcomed by Mr Jim Haynes, President of NSW Police Bowling Club, Great Lakes Mayor John Chadban, Dale Maitland, President of St Johns Park and Tuncurry Bowling Clubs and Paul Riggs, President of TuncurryBowling Club Mens Section, the Carnival was formally opened by Superintendent Peter Thurtell, the Local Area Commander for the Manning & Great Lakes area. Traditionally the Senior Police Officer present rolls the first bowl of the Carnival and Superintendent Thurtell, a non bowler, showed all the skill of a seasoned campaigner as he drew a shot to within a metre of the jack. And so the Carnival began.

SIDES CHAMPIONSHIPS
This event is played in a Pennant type format with 5 teams of fours playing for each State. It is a highly prized championship event as it gives the winning State bragging rights for 12 months. South Australia won it in 2005 at Glenelg, SA, and many thought it was the home ground advantage of 16 plus second greens. NSW beat SA in the second round and were quietly confident however a shock loss to Victoria saw NSW playing their final game against WA needing to win their five rinks to win the trophy. The task was beyond them and although they won the game they lost 2 rinks in the process. With both South Australia and NSW having three wins and a loss each, the trophy went to South Australia who had won 2 more rinks, proving their win last year was no flash-in-the-pan affair.

Fours championships
The semi finals saw the SA team of Andy Hall, Kym Wakefield,John Morris & John McKnight beat the NSW team of Peter Redman (Toronto) John Brereton (Robina these days) Graham Richardson (North Beach) and John O’Connell (Wenty Leagues) on an extra end after O’Connell played a great bowl to tie it up on 21 ends. In the other Semi the WA team of Len Ferguson, Tony Horner, Pat Donnelly and Bernie Hett defeated another NSW team, Brian Bennett (Northmead, Michael Johnson (Lithgow) Neil Dell (The Entrance) and George Stewart (Windang) fairly comfortably.

The final saw McKnight’s team run away to a big break early but with Alan Booth substituting and DONNELLY skipping, the WA side fought their way back into it. Going into the last end the SA team led by one but the WA boys responded and drew 2 close shots which remained there until the end and they won the championship 22-21 in one of the great comebacks.

FOURS PLATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The final saw two NSW teams clash. In a tight game Jim Haynes (Ramsgate RSL) Ian Hill (Alstonville) Don Breeze (West Dubbo) and Jim Cranna (Port Macquarie City) fell behind early but lifted their games in the later ends against John McLeod (Tuncurry) Jim Rook (Tareee West) Craig Thompson (Forster & Deam Smith (Double Bay). Going into the last end Cranna’s team lead by two shots. With Smith needing to play a miracle bowl with his last to save the game he played the near perfect bowl and shifted the jack to another of his teams his bowls. But a Breeze ‘positional’ bowl was second shot so Cranna put his last bowl in his pocket(under threat of physical assault from his team) and they ran out the winners 17-16

TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
In a see-sawing affair between two WA teams the result was in doubt until the last couple of ends. Ultimately Bob Bandy, Tony Cocodis and Des Foley defeated Don Grey, Merv Cousins and Alan Hogarth 22-17. . The defeated semi finalists were from Victoria and SA.

PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The semi finals saw two NSW team move through to the final. John Eding (Coffs Ex-Services) and Jim Cranna (Port Macquarie City) were behind 4-14 against Rick Hutchinson & Bernie Hett WA but things started to fall into place for the NSW team and they kept their opponents to only 2 further shots and scored 22 themselves to run out winners 26 –16. In the other Semi Jim Rook (Taree West) and Craig Thompson (Forster always had their game under control against the Victorian team of Glynn Ellis & Craig Matters and ran out comfortable winners.

The final saw Rook & Thompson skip away to a 10 – 1 lead after 10 ends but Eding & Cranna fought back to a 9-10 scoreline. Rook then played a decisive bowl putting the jack in the going from 3 down to 4 up. A couple of ends later, with Eding & Cranna holding 5 shots, Thompson drew a resting toucher with his last bowl to deny his opponents a score. With Thompson putting on a wonderful display of precision draw bowling he and Rook went on to a comfortable 21-13 win to become the Pairs Champions for 2006.

PAIRS PLATE
This was another championship that was fought out between two teams from Western Australia. In the end, after a very tight game, Phil Dobie & Pat Donnelly got away in the second half of the game to run out winners over Wayne Olive and Bob Lee 24-13 Three of the finalists, Phil, Pat & Wayne were playing in their first Carnival. Pat had an outstanding Carnival, winning the Fours as well as this title.

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
What a final it was with the healthy crowd on hand applauding almost every bowl. Trevor Melotte VIC, a 2 time winner of the title, played Ross Dempsey WA who is a current WA State player and also a previous Australian Police Singles title winner. In a game of the highest quality every head changed at least 4 times. Dempsey would get about 4-5 shots ahead and when it looked like he would increase his lead, Melotte would do something special to pick up a shot or two. Melotte gradually applied the pressure and got to a lead of 19-17. Continuing his great bowling he did not relinquish his lead and eventually took out the title 25-19 The game is considered to be amongst one of the best finals seen in the past 20 years. Congratulations to both players but there can only be one Australian Police Singles Champion for 2006 and that honour goes to TREVOR MELOTTE of Victoria.

The beaten semi-finalists were both from SA, Col Davies and John Morris. Both are top level players in their State and to reach the semi finals in the high quality field that now contests the Australian Police Singles Championship is no small feat.

PLATE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Who would have expected to see this final between Ian Miles and Barry Lane, both from Victoria. Both Barry & Ian are both multiple championship winners with both having won Australian Police Singles titles. Such is the quality of the competition these days.
Barry started very quickly and zipped away to a handy lead. Ian, using as new set of ‘candy’ pink bowls much to the delight of his Victorian teammates, commenced to draw brilliantly and he went on to catch Barry, pass him and win the game 25-16

CONSISTENCY TROPHY
Based on points awarded to the winners and losers in the major championship events, the trophy was taken out by Western Australia who had finalists in the Singles, Triples & Fours, winning 2 of these titles. Closest to WA were NSW.

The Presentation night was excellent with well over 250 people in attendance.
Traditionally, the Singles Champion speak on behalf of all participant. Trevor Melotte praised the organization of the event and in particular the parts played by St Johns Park & Tuncurry Bowling Clubs. He particularly singled out Paul Norris, the Bowls Manager of both Clubs and Tony Cahill the Bowling Co-Ordinator at Tuncurry. He also praised the committee of the NSWPBC for the work they did over the past 12 months to ensure the success of the Carnival and the NSW ladies who worked tirelessly during the week. Dale Maitland, President of both Clubs, announced that St John Park Bowling Club would sponsor the Australian Police Bowling Carnivals for the next 4 years, to be held alternatively in Qld, Vic, WA and SA. The announcement received a standing ovation from the Police bowling fraternity.

The New South Wales Police Bowling Club in particular would like to thank St Johns Park Bowling Club for their generous support and sponsorship, carnivals such as this would not go ahead without the generosity of St Johns Park.

The 49th Australian Police Bowling Championships will be held in Caloundra, Queensland in April, 2007. Should any serving, retired or former member of the Police Force require any information on membership of the NSWPBC you can contact the Secretary Rod Howard on 0431391840 or Email nswpolicebowls@yahoo.com.au

Good luck & Good Bowling.
