N.S.W POLICE WIN AT AUSTRALIAN POLICE WINTER GAMES

The New South Wales Police Ski Team has won the team trophy at the Australian Police Winter Games for the first time since 1993. The Australian Police Winter Games were held at Mt Hotham, Victoria between 8 and 13 August 2004.

State teams represented the various police forces and included New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland and Combined (representing Tasmania, South Australia and Federal Police). The only police force not represented this year was Northern Territory.

Competition was downhill skiing over two days conducted over the Slalom and Gaint Slalom courses. Categories contested were Opens, A Grade and B Grade, and with various age categories. Mount Hotham, the venue for the winter games was excellent, with a steep and challenging mountain and fantastic snow. Poor weather unfortunately curtailed some of the Open and A Grade racing, but competition was still fierce. The competition and difficulty in the Open/A Grade course was exemplified by a couple of the top guns coming to grief during their runs. This opened to way for some less experienced racers to show the way and NSW was able to take advantage of this and move up the medal tally and points board and extend it’s already impressive lead.

The New South Wales team was well represented across all categories and scored impressively in the final medal tally. This win directed the Colin Vickers Trophy to New South Wales, the first win by New South Wales since 1993, when the team won at Mount Blue Cow, N.S.W.

All in all it was a great team effort and the New South Wales Police Ski Team will have a year at the top before defending the title at the 2005 Australian Police Winter Ski Games.
