A magical time in Brazil

On Sunday 23 July, the NSW Police sports team left Sydney bound for the concrete jungle of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The team consisted of nine competitors from various metropolitan and country stations throughout NSW. All police were travelling to South America to represent Australia in the 2006 International Law Enforcement Games. The team comprised of seven tennis players, one boxer and one weightlifter. After a 16 hour flight with a stop over in sunny Auckland the team arrived weary, jet lagged but ready for competition.

Over the next four days there were a number of close matches played on the clay courts at the Sao Paulo Recreational tennis centre. Matches were played in great-spirit against a number of different nations including Brazil, Russia, America and Italy. The Australian women dominated in the singles draw winning Gold, Silver and Bronze. Australia also fared well in the Mixed Doubles with another clean sweep of the medals. In total the tennis team won 15 medals - 5 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze.

Australia was also very successful in the other events. Our boxing representative put up a gallant fight but was unfortunately out punched by a classy Russian opponent. He was however able to hang on to snatch the silver medal. Derrick Williams our sole Australian weightlifter excelled in the dead-lift, lifting his personal best of 260kg; more than any other person at the event. Not surprisingly this lift secured another gold medal for Australia.

Upon completion of the games seven members of the team travelled to Rio, Brazil and saw the sights of Sugar Loaf Mountain, Christ The Redeemer and Copacabana Beach. The next stop was Iguaçu Falls, (which would have been amazing if not for the lack of water due to draught!!), and then onto Buenos Aires, Argentina for a busy few days. Cusco, Peru was the last stop in preparation for our trek along the Inca Trail. The trail was the most physically demanding and yet spectacular event of the trip. Arriving at the ‘lost’ city of Machu Piccu was definitely a highlight. The high altitude, (over 4000m) obviously did something to the boys with two marriage proposals being made!! It was truly a magical place to end a fantastic trip.

THE WAXHEADS AND WACKETS BALL

What a night......the band went off, the food was great and all and sundry seemed to consume more than their fair share of liquid refreshments ! We were able to auction off some great prizes. Once again Geoff Horner came thru with a custom made board, which Dave Abbott successfully scored for himself.

Thanks to all the committee members who sourced prizes and items to auction......even Bolts got a Hi-Fi system, thanks Bing Lee at Brookvale! Surf Hardware, Fin Control Systems and Gorrilla Grip, once again gave us great support and lots a party goers scored fins, bags and board grips at a fraction of retail prices. (we even auctioned Hodgos own FSC bag by
mistake !)

We made around $1000, which the committee has decided to use to fund the making of a club shirt. If any members have any contacts in the clothing and printing arenas please get back to us. Teaming up with the Tennis Club proved a masterstroke with Shioban Munro and Laura Lambert really making sure the night went off without a hitch. The night was so successful that we are going to make it a regular thing !

TENNIS REPORT - ILEG OTTAWA, CANADA 2002

Tennis Competitors;
Siobhan MUNRO, David BRISSETT, Colin SHEEAN, John TINZBERG, Doug McKenzie and Andrew GRACE.

The tennis competition was held over three days with both singles and doubles events being competed in. Unfortunately due to the lack of participants a number of the age events had to be combined and other events cancelled altogether.

The organisation of the event was very average with few facilities for the players at the tennis complex. The venue was not ideal with a small clubhouse, no toilet facilities and no drink or food available. The surface played on was hardcourt.

The Australian competitors did extremely well with medals being won in all events entered.
The medal results are as follows;
Siobhan MUNRO: Gold OWS and Gold OXD, David BRISSETT: Bronze OMD, Colin SHEEAN: Silver 50ÕsMD and Bronze 55ÕsMD, John TINZBERG: Gold OXD and Bronze OMD.

In total there were medals won by the Australian team, which was a very good effort.

Compared to the WPFG in Indianapolis 2001, these games were well below standard in terms of both the number of participants and the level of competition. Despite the disappointing turn out, all the tennis competitors enjoyed a very good week and look forward to competing again in Barcelona.
